While testing a flying machine on the parallel world of Annwn, Dylan and Clarinda discover that the island of Hibernia (Annwn’s version of Ireland) has been hijacked. The entire island is adrift, moving rapidly westward under an unknown power. The couple flies to the island to investigate.  Upon arriving in Hibernia, the pair finds that the local population is under a magical spell and is too intoxicated and preoccupied with feuding to notice that their home is on the move. Most of the islanders are under a geas (a magical command), which forces them to obey a mysterious “queen”.

Dylan and Clarinda team up with two bards, the twins Lludd and Llefelys, who are members of an ancient underground race called the Tuatha. The bards offer to help the MacBrides solve the mystery. As they travel, Llefelys attempts to seduce Dylan, but he remains faithful to his wife, who can communicate with him telepathically. They eventually discover that the queen is Tethys, Clarinda’s distant cousin and the daughter of the sea god. Tethys plans to sink Hibernia beneath the waves so she can be the last living creature on the sea. The climax involves Dylan being forced into a coliseum to fight for Tethys’s hand in marriage, while he and Clarinda must also figure out a way to break Tethys’s control and save the island
