The story follows Anna-Lou Schreckengost, an orphaned woman from a small town with a pleasant singing voice. This voice leads to her transformation from a five and dime ribbon counter worker to a famous record star. Sid Harper’s record company molds her into the “girl next door” image, and she becomes a number one record star, believing the fabricated lies about herself. Her fame leads her to defy the organization and travel to Hollywood, where she is ultimately ignored and mocked. She returns to New York, frantic and tense, singing to survive and anticipating a return to her humble beginnings, albeit clad in mink.Â
