Look here, Mr. District Attorney! Just a minute, Mr. Police Commissioner!
We suggest that you both read this book. It will tell you the bitter facts of life about your city. It is the lowdown, the inside story of gangsterdom. These are the per- sonal revelations of a New York East Side punk who killed his way up to become Mr. Big in America’s Cartel of Crime.

JUST ANOTHER CHEAP HOOD

“A cheap hoodlum dressed up in fancy clothes-that’s all | am.”

I slapped her then, hard and quick across the face.

“That’s how guys like me treat their women!”

I ripped her dress down the front and tore away the things she was wearing underneath, leaving her standing there naked in her stockings like a cheap whore. But she stood straight and proud, as though she didn’t know she was naked. As though she couldn’t hear the ugly names I was calling her.

“Please, Tony. Please don’t … ”

I laughed at her. And then I wondered what she would say if she knew for certain what had happened to her brother.

I had had to kill the bastard.
