job than all the king’s horses had been with Humpty Dumpty. First, the Druggish simply disassembled Edward Berner-tissue by tissue, nerve by nerve. In tanks they stored the million remnants and shreds that had benn Berner, and they changed his brain into a fantastic recording device.

Berner was very cautious when he out- lined his demands to the Druggish. He knew all the fables, the fairy tales-rub the magic lantern or get three wishes and what happens? Disaster! Start out rich and powerful and end up behind the 8-ball. Well it wasn’t going to happen to him. Not after a lifetime of failure. He covered every angle, every possible loophole, when he asked for the strength of a superman.

And when he came to sex, he made them understand exactly what he wanted-endowments unmatched in all of human history: powers that put Casanova to shame! Only then was he satisfied-only then did he place himself in the hands of the alien creatures.
His life, once they reassembled him, would be a dream of power and pleasure.
And for a while it was-until Fate once again stepped in to play its ancient role. Then the fable of Edward Berner rushed toward its inevitable conclusion.
