She had memorized the words she was going to write. Now, gazing at the newspaper spread on the floor, she began to figure just how large she could make the letters.
There was a scraping sound outside the door. She froze. If they caught her, they’d kill her for sure. They were insane, both of them.
She knew it now. And what if no one saw the message? What if no one across the street even bothered to look out of a window? A million things could go wrong. It was crazy to think it would work. But she had to try.
There would never be another chance. To- morrow would be too late.
