The story takes place on the planet Melange, a world with a feudal social structure. The population is split into two classes: the tyrannical feudal masters and the oppressed, cloned serfs known as “churls”.
Centuries ago, a rebel leader named DeCade and his wizard ally led an unsuccessful revolt. DeCade was killed, but his legacy lives on in songs and legends. The churls eagerly await his prophesied return.
The plot follows Dirk Dulain, a former churl who escaped Melange and joined a Resistance movement. He returns to his home world to start a new rebellion but faces a major obstacle: the churls will not act without the return of their legendary hero, DeCade.
While on Melange, Dirk encounters a mysterious off-world traveler and nobleman named Gar. Gar, who is far more powerful than he appears, agrees to help Dirk with his mission. The two work together to rekindle the spirit of rebellion among the churls while facing down the lords and the challenges posed by DeCade’s enduring legend.
