Thousands of years in the future, humanity has settled countless other planets, and the original Earth has been nearly abandoned after a devastating past war. The powerful “Cemetery” corporation has turned the planet into a vast, manicured cemetery, selling burial plots to off-worlders for exorbitant prices. The story centers on Fletcher Carson, a native of the planet Alden and a “compositor” (a type of artist using a robotic recording device, a “Bronco”, to capture multi-sensory experiences). Carson returns to Earth to create an authentic work of art that captures the planet’s true, wild ambiance, which is largely ignored by the commercialized burial industry. His quest leads him and his companions—including an archaeologist named Cynthia and a mysterious, ancient robot—into the untamed wilderness of Earth, beyond the managed cemetery zones. There, they encounter various bizarre inhabitants, such as war machines still running on ancient orders, mechanical wolves, and even ghosts. As they journey, they are pursued by the powerful Cemetery corporation, which views Carson’s unauthorized artistic endeavor as a threat to their control over Earth’s image. The quest ultimately involves a treasure hunt and a mission to potentially rebuild a human world on Earth.
