The novel, originally published in 1931, is a racy Jazz Age story set in New York City. It follows the character of Ruth Robbins, a young woman from a small New England town who moves to the big city. Having been labeled “fast” in her hometown and influenced by her Uncle Ben’s advice to pursue her desires, Ruth puts his counsel into practice in New York, becoming a “kept woman”.
