The story is set after a period of civil unrest known as the Frontier Rebellion, which involved the colonists of the Pleiades Planets and the “Old Worlders” of Earth. Former Rebel “highjacker” Culihan “Cully” O’Rourke returns to Earth, only to be arrested and tortured. He learns of an ultimatum issued to humanity by a non-human alien race known as the Moldaugs.Â
The Moldaugs demand that humans abandon the Pleiades Planets, claiming the star system for themselves and threatening to annihilate the entire human race if they refuse. Fearing galactic war, the Old Worlders on Earth begin aligning with the Moldaugs and are ready to sacrifice the Pleiades colonists.Â
Released by his captors, Cully O’Rourke realizes that the colonists in the Pleiades cannot count on Earth’s help. He heads back to the frontier to wage a guerrilla war of his own. He faces long odds but is determined not to give up his home without a fight.
