The novel’s story follows a successful but dissolute media executive, Jim Kittering, who becomes shipwrecked on a Caribbean island with two women: a writer named Florence Carr and a sexually repressed missionary’s wife named Melody. Removed from the constraints of civilization, the three engage in a sexualized exploration of their taboos and fantasies. Jim services both women, eventually causing Melody to become pregnant. Florence also has a sexual awakening on the island.
