Duke was a devil incarnate, and he was in the power seat. The others knew he had to be stopped-at any cost!

“Don’t sweat it, kid,” Duke said. “Won’t do you any good. This gun makes all the difference. Duke Heller has got everything under control.” Duke stood up and stretched. Then he looked down at Sandy and motioned with his head.
“Come on, doll.”
“Where?”
“We’re going to bed. There ain’t nothing else to do. And it’s getting too cold to stay up. Let’s go build us a fire.” Sandy got up and followed him to the stairs. She was frightened of Duke, but she was afraid to cross him.
Carl and Faye watched Duke climb the stairs, dragging Sandy reluctantly behind him. They sat silently for several minutes, holding each other. Then they got up without a word and went upstairs to search for a bedroom.
Faye sat down beside Carl and gripped his arm fearfully. “He’s a monster,” she said. “I’m afraid for Sandy.”
“We’ve got to watch out for her.”
“But how?” Faye shuddered. “He’s got a gun.”
