The novel is set in Manduwoc, a declining seaside resort town populated by a cast of deeply flawed characters. The central figure is Luane Devore, a bedridden, hypochondriac woman who is universally despised for her malicious gossip that has the power to ruin lives. Nearly everyone in town, including her young husband, has a motive to want her dead—some for her hidden money, others to silence her.Â
The unique aspect of the story is that it leads up to the inevitable murder rather than starting with a body. Each chapter is a first-person account from a different character’s perspective, building a complex picture of the community’s secrets, lies, and interconnected conflicts, all leading to a grim conclusion.
