Rushing southwest across Illinois, April Williams had made the long drive from Chicago, her thoughts and feelings alternating from quiet triumph to keen disappointment. The mucky, humid heat of the last days of August had not helped her to strike any sort of emotional balance. She had fought sweat, sun glare and traffic all the long miles-having set out to complete the drive in a single day.
