The story focuses on a fledgling publicist, Doria Livingston, who is tasked with writing the life story of a has-been actress. Through her research, Doria uncovers the pervasive influence of a mysterious figure named Bert Irving. Bert, an invalid, has exerted control over the lives of three women who were once involved with him: Ginny (the actress whose career he managed), his wife Helen (whose emotional development he stunted), and Grace Ballantine (whose second marriage was a consequence of Bert’s influence). Doria also finds herself drawn to Bert, despite his unappealing nature, becoming infatuated with the idea of him. Bert’s ambition to be a “kingmaker” ultimately leads to the emotional and professional deterioration of those around him. His death ultimately brings a sense of release to these women.Â
