The Heart in Exile is a groundbreaking 1953 novel, considered the first gay detective story, that offers a detailed look into the “gay underworld” of 1950s London. It was written by Hungarian author Adam de Hegedus under the pseudonym Rodney Garland due to its controversial themes…

The story follows Dr. Tony Page, a psychiatrist, who investigates the mysterious overdose death of Julian Leclerc, a handsome young barrister and Page’s former lover. Although the death is officially ruled an accident, Julian’s fiancée, Ann Hewitt, suspects otherwise and seeks Tony’s help.
Tony’s investigation takes him deep into the hidden, clandestine gay social scene of post-war London, from pubs and parties to the Houses of Parliament. The novel uses the framework of a noir thriller to explore the realities of homosexual life when it was still illegal, including the constant fear of exposure and social ruin. As Tony searches for the truth behind Julian’s death, he is also forced to confront his own identity and past.
